The
300ZX
Background
As far as New Zealand was concerned the new 300ZX first
appeared and was sold in 1990, a non turbo 2+2 manual, and was an ex
demonstrator car. Originally priced at around $98,000, it certainly wasn't a car
for the mass market.
The history of sales went like this, with all cars imported by Nissan New
Zealand and being 2+2 and non turbo:
1991: 10 auto, and 5 manual.
1992: 2 auto 1 manual
1993: 1 auto 4 manual
In 1993, the flood of used Japanese car imports was starting, and in 1994
you could buy a used 300ZX turbo for $60,000, so:
1994: 0
1995 1 auto 1 manual
1996: 0
By 1995, with a price tag of $106,000 as compared with a used import price of $50,000 for a turbo, Nissan New Zealand decided to call it quits. In 1996 the price of turbo versions had dropped to $30,000 and the non turbo $25,000 for used Japanese imports.
A Christchurch Car Dealer took it on their own to import a small quantity Nissan 300ZX turbos, and were selling them for $120,000.
