Repairs: Where can I get it repaired and what should my expectations be ?

It is a rare Japanese import which is perfect or has been well looked after. In fact you may be disappointed over time with what you may have to spend on the car. Be consoled however that what you spend will be only a fraction of what it would cost if it was a Porsche and you get the same performance.

And note here that if the 300zx got (gets) the same care and attention as the Porsche did then it would be in the same good condition. And it depends on how fussy you are. Whereas I might replace bits of trim (and spend heaps of money) you may elect not to. See point above re what to look for. If you are handy with a screwdriver most maintenance can be done at home.

Try this site for information zhome.com, or others listed in point 22. which show you how to do the common things. Also how to do some of the tuning modifications. It has been my experience that overall levels of expertise are dropping with the constant squeeze on the consumer dollar. If your car was purchased with a warranty then the warranty company will probably insist you get any repairs done at a recognized Nissan dealership.

My experience, and others both in NZ and overseas, is that Nissan dealer mechanics have trouble telling the time of day (perhaps I am being a little harsh here) especially with regards to 300zx's. Their main method of repair seems to be to replace the faulty part with the next larger assembly. And guess who pays the cost here. Only the very common parts are kept in NZ with everything else coming from Japan. Their service manual is the same as you can buy elsewhere. They tend not to give you part numbers upon request.

They unfortunately tend to be the only people with a Nissan Consult unit (see above). They will NOT sell you Consult units, service manuals or parts lists. The common complaint with repairs is that they still haven't fixed the problem. Some routine maintenance like oil changes etc can be performed by general garages. Anything complicated go for a specialist. Some places are listed below but others do exist but they are not in my City. They can tend to be a little dearer than other places but you will hopefully not have to go back as often. Auckland - Harvey's Christchurch - Canterbury Engine and Automotive Specialists Ltd or - Autotek Group Ltd For panel beating you are on your own. One time you get an excellent job but the next time it is crap. If you find someone who is consistently good let me know.
